Hi, I’m Bea Obcena
I’m a contemporary realist artist and educator from the Philippines with a lifelong love for sketchbooks and storytelling through art.
I’ve been drawing for as long as I can remember, filling sketchbooks with ideas, observations, and little worlds of my own. What started as something deeply personal eventually grew into @beao.art and a community of fellow artists and sketchbook lovers.
Today, I help artists move past the blank page, draw more consistently, and explore their ideas, while building a sketchbook practice they genuinely enjoy.
That’s why I created Sketchbook Journal: to share the techniques and creative habits that have helped me fill my own pages with more confidence and intention.

In this module, I’ll discuss the benefits of building a sketchbook habit and how it can shape your art style. We’ll go over the essential materials you’ll need, along with some helpful recommendations, and I’ll share tips on how I organize my own sketchbooks to inspire and enhance your creative practice.
In this module, I’ll guide you through my shading technique, showing you how to achieve a smooth, polished finish without relying on shading stumps or brushes. You’ll learn how to create depth and texture solely by adjusting your pencil pressure and layering strokes strategically. I’ll walk you through the process step by step with a demonstration using a basic subject, helping you grasp the technique in a hands-on way.
We will begin with a simple yet engaging warm-up exercise: drawing a flower. This exercise will introduce you to basic shapes and lines, allowing you to loosen up and get comfortable with your tools. Starting with light sketch lines, you’ll create the flower’s central shape, then gradually add petals and stems, focusing on proportions and symmetry.
In this module, I’ll show you my approach to drawing portraits with a more sustainable practice, breaking it down to simple shapes and studying how each feature aligns with the others. You’ll also develop your observation skill, learning to capture finer details and create more realistic, expressive portraits.
In this module, we’ll explore the essentials of figurative art, focusing on techniques for achieving accurate proportions and adding life to dynamic poses. You’ll learn how to break down the human form into simple shapes, helping you capture movement and create expressive, well-balanced figures.
To complete our work, we’ll focus on filling the negative spaces on our sketchbook page, adding balance and cohesion to the composition. Finally, we’ll learn techniques to seal the page, preserving it and giving the sketchbook a polished, tidy finish.
